Red Deer Hunting

Mature red deer have large bodies and hunting methods for them changes according to the stage of their life cycle.

They usually stay in single-sex groups for most of the year, however, during the mating season (March/April), called the rut/roar, mature stags compete for the attention of the hinds and will then try to defend the hinds they attract.

Rival stags challenge opponents by belling and walking in parallel. This behavior gives the hunter an opportunity to see more deer, but it also means there are alot of female eyes to ruin your hunt.

Only mature stags hold harems (groups of hinds), and breeding success along with trophy potential peaks at about eight years of age. Stags two to four years old rarely hold harems and spend most of the rut on the periphery of larger harems, as do stags over 11 years old.

Key Hunting Notes (multiple species can be hunted at this property)

WHEN: February to July

WHERE: Start at Benalla, Victoria, Australia. We then drive to the private game ranch.

HUNTING METHODS: Glassing from strategic positions, sit and wait/ambush, driving in 4x4 to spot and stalk, stalking through bush.

TYPICAL DAY: Wake up in the dark prior to sunrise for light breakfast, then commence hunting until mid morning. Return to have lunch break at the accommodation. Hunt evening until dark. Of course when you shoot a deer the hunt will change to deer retrieval.

REQUIREMENTS: Some low level fitness for glassing and sit and wait methods. Medium to high fitness for stalking.

Game licence and firearms licence (we will organize for international hunters)

ACCOMMODATION: Hunters house

COST: Hunting day rate of $700 AU ($600 US) per day, second person $200 AU (150 US). Min 4 days.
The trophy fee for red deer ranges from $150 AU for a cull, $1,500 AU 12 point and $1,850 AU over 12 points. Smaller game ranch with top SCI class Red Deer Trophies available on request.

PRICE INCLUDES: Includes: food, alcohol, accommodation, gun usage, trophy preparation, trophy delivery to taxidermist.

NOT INCLUDED: Travel insurances, International licence fees (but we can organize for you).
